Week 3 Top Games: BGA, Nashville Christian set for high-scoring clash

0 0

Week 3 has arrived. It may be hard to believe but this week’s slate of games means that we’re a third of the way through the regular season.

Not that we want to jump too far ahead, lets take a look at this week’s slate of games and what a week it’s set to be. From rematches of a year ago to what promises to be high-scoring spotlight game, it was hard for us to figure out where exactly we wanted to go this week.

Here’s a look at our top 10 games for the week and a little background on each.

Spotlight Game: Nashville Christian (2-0) at BGA (2-0)

Is there a limit to how many points could be scored in this one?

Two of the area’s most-prolific offenses square off as the Wildcats host the Eagles. BGA is the area’s highest-scoring team putting up 68 in its first game and 69 in Week 2. Behind the arm of 2026 five-star Georgia commitment Jared Curtis, Nashville Christian also put up 69 points last week.

A lot of points were scored in this one last year as well as BGA cruised to a 38-21 win. Whatever defense gets a stop first ultimately decide who walks away from this game 3-0.

Beech (1-1) at Riverdale (2-0)

Beech has had some trouble getting its offense off and running through the first two weeks. Things won’t get easier this week against a Riverdale side that’s been strong on that side of the ball through its first two games.

The Warriors had no issues dispatching Henry County team last week limiting the Patriots through the air and on the ground.

Riverdale’s a 6A team flying under the radar but a win here would immediately put the Warriors back in the conversation of the best 6A teams around.

Friendship Christian (1-1) at Columbia Academy (1-1)

Friendship’s schedule doesn’t get any easier this week as the Commanders will face the best running back, and potentially offense, they will see all season.

Montae Baldwin’s started the year on a tear but the Bulldogs did suffer their first loss of the season last week against the Webb School. The Bulldogs can put up points but they also are prone to give up plenty.

Expect to see the Commanders to be run-heavy to try and keep Baldwin off of the field.

Gallatin (1-1) at Mt. Juliet (2-0)

Region 4-6A figures to be the craziest in our area this season and it kicks off with two teams who have a a very real chance of winning it. One team has found a groove so far while the other seems to be getting there.

Mt. Juliet’s had no issues in its first two games dispatching Cane Ridge 50-0 and Hunters Lane 45-14. Gallatin started off the year slow in a 19-16 loss to Hendersonville but bounced back with a 42-28 win over Station Camp last week.

This was one of the better games around last season as Mt. Juliet held on for the 32-26 win.

Haywood (2-0) at Oakland (2-0)

No team in the state had a better win than the Patriots in Week 2. They traveled down to Texas and beat the state’s defending Class 5A champions without Daune Morris.

Haywood’s looked like a 4A title contender so far this season. The Tomcats outscored PURE Academy and Memphis Business Academy by a combined score of 90-20.

If you’re looking for a fun running back matchup, this game is for you. Oakland’s duo of T.T. Hill and Craig Tutt going against Haywood’s Cam Miller and Kemonte Williams is must-see TV.

Hendersonville (2-0) at Brentwood (1-1)

The Commandos have been a pleasant surprise so far this season after losing key players like Mason Baker from last year’s squad. Where they’ve excelled is on the defensive side of the ball.

Hendersonville’s limited its first two opponents to an average of 14.5 points including just 13 to Gallatin in the season-opener.

Brentwood has also been stout defensively but the Bruins’ offense is a work-in-progress. While the Bruins scored 24 points in their season-opener, they only scored six last week in their 16-6 loss to Brentwood Academy.

Macon County (2-0) at Upperman (2-0)

The Region 4-4A title could very well be decided as early as Week 3 because of this matchup. This could also be the first of two potentially matchups between the Bees and Tigers.

Last year Upperman got the best of Macon in both games they played. They beat the Tigers 14-7 in the regular season and 17-14 when they met in the state quarterfinals.

Macon County has aspirations of being a state title contender. A win here would move them one step closer to that goal but Upperman looks to be the favorite heading into this game.

Marshall County (2-0) at Station Camp (0-2)

Don’t be fooled, Station Camp may be the best 0-2 team around. The Bison pushed Beech for three quarters before collapsing in the fourth and then tested Gallatin last week in a 42-28 loss.

Things ramp up this week though as a spot for a top two spot in Region 5-4A is up for grabs here.

The Bison’s defense will have to step as the offense still seems to be figuring things out. Marshall County put up 47 points last week in a win over Shelbyville and beat Station Camp 20-11 last season.

Pope John Paul II (0-2) at CPA (2-0)

Pope has shown flashes of great play but has yet to put together a whole game. That doesn’t bode well against a CPA team that looks primed to defend its DII-AA title.

The Knights made a comeback last week against Father Ryan but struggles early on made the comeback all for naught. CPA faced the opposite jumping out to a 21-0 lead before Pearl-Cohn scored two late touchdowns to make it 21-15.

CPA had no issues in this game last season cruising to the 49-20. Expect to see Hutson Chance airing it out quite a bit against Pope’s secondary.

Summit (1-1) at Green Hill (2-0)

This was a shootout last season but this season features two teams going in opposite directions.

Green Hill’s cruised in its first two games beating Northeast 41-7 and West Creek 44-0. Summit opened the year with a 28-16 win over Spring Hill but were dismantled by Centennial 42-7 last week.

Kannon Burroughs had a lot of success against the Spartans last year and will look to keep that momentum going especially with Aaron Mattingly back healthy.
