Girls Basketball Rankings: Jules Ferrell shines in DII-A District 3 Tournament

0 0

As the postseason quickly approaches for most teams in the 615, a few began their run to a gold ball last week.

Between teams closing out their seasons on the right foot and others suffering uncharacteristic upsets last week, this week’s set of rankings saw its fair share of shakeups.

Based on those results, our staff took some time to rank this week’s top five large and small class programs. The rankings are based on an average of where our staff ranked the teams.

Large Class teams include 4A, 3A, and Division II-AA. Small Class teams include 2A, 1A, and Division II-A.

Here’s a look at the top girls teams in our area entering the second week of February.

Large Class

1. CPA (23-2): The Lady Lions are on a roll going into the postseason winning their last five games in blowout fashion. Last week they concluded their regular season with a 57-38 win over Harpeth Hall and a 70-30 win over Brentwood Academy.

2. Blackman (22-3): No team in the 615 has a longer winning streak than the Lady Blaze. With wins over Rockvale (73-46) and La Vergne (61-49), they’ve upped their winning streak to 15 games.

3. Nolensville (22-4): The Lady Knights are playing their best ball at the right time of the year. Their wins last week included Ravenwood (64-48) and Franklin (62-50).

4. Lebanon (22-5): District play was successful for the Devilettes as they beat Wilson Central 62-44 and Mt. Juliet 46-36. However, Smith County upset them 47-44 earlier in the week.

5. Lipscomb Academy (23-6): Completing the trend of the DII-AA Middle Region being unpredictable, the Lady Mustangs crushed Ensworth 56-33 and closed out the regular season with a 47-39 win over Father Ryan.

Who just missed out: Ensworth (17-4), Page (19-6)

Small Class

1. MTCS (23-4): Miss Basketball finalist Jules Ferrell capped off an incredible DII-A District 3 Tournament run by scoring 29 points, including the game-winner, in the Lady Cougars’ 46-43 championship win over PCA.

2. PCA (22-5): After crushing Franklin Christian 74-40 and beating BGA by 11, the Lady Lions nearly completed a double-digit comeback against MTCS but came up just short giving up the game-winner with nine seconds remaining.

3. Ezell-Harding (29-1): The first two rounds of the DII-A District 2 tournament were a breeze for the Lady Eagles as they beat USN by 44 and Clarksville Academy by 33. However, Nashville Christian proved to be a different challenge handing them their first loss of the season by a score of 47-45.

4. East Nashville (17-3): Blowout wins over Lead Academy and KIPP Antioch were the catalyst of what would go on to be a 46-33 road win over Pearl-Cohn.

5. Pearl-Cohn (19-5): The Lady Firebirds were only able to get in one game during the week suffering a 46-33 loss at home to East Nashville.

Who just missed out: Nashville Christian (18-10), Smith County (18-10)
