As the postseason quickly approaches for most teams in the 615, a few began their run to a gold ball last week.
Between teams closing out their seasons on the right foot and others suffering uncharacteristic upsets last week, this week’s set of rankings saw its fair share of shakeups.
Based on those results, our staff took some time to rank this week’s top five large and small class programs. The rankings are based on an average of where our staff ranked the teams.
Large Class teams include 4A, 3A, and Division II-AA. Small Class teams include 2A, 1A, and Division II-A.
Here’s a look at the top boys teams in our area entering the third week of February.
Large Class
1. Beech (26-2): Mr. Basketball finalist Cutter Sisk and the Bucs have kept it business as usual. They beat up on Gallatin 78-60 and then had no issues against Green Hill in a 59-36 victory.
2. Pope John Paul II (21-7): The week was a bit of a mixed bag for the Knights. To start it off they blew past Brentwood Academy 78-58 but their senior night was spoiled by MBA as the Big held on for 75-69 win.
3. Lipscomb Academy (26-3): Nash Stark’s double-double against Father Ryan highlighted a great bounce-back week for the Mustangs as they beat Ensworth 50-45 and the Fighting Irish 69-57.
4. Brentwood (23-3): Davis Cochran and the Bruins put on an offensive showcase in a 98-66 win over Centennial. They then completed the regular season sweep over Ravenwood with a 61-48 victory.
5. MBA (16-7): There aren’t many teams entering the postseason riding higher than the Big Red right now. They’ve won four of their last five including wins over Lipscomb Academy, Brentwood Academy and JPII.
Who just missed out: Blackman (21-4), Franklin (18-7)
Small Class
1. PCA (23-6): If there were any doubts as to who the top team in DII-A was this year, the Lions erased those doubts with their performance in the DII-A District 3 tournament. In their three games they beat Franklin Christian 72-54, MTCS 82-41 and BGA 65-53.
2. Eagleville (23-0): All the Eagles do is win and they win big. In their wins over Hampshire, Cascade and Santa Fe last week, they won by an average of 43 points.
