Spears: My final boys basketball state championship predictions

0 0

The final week of the TSSAA high school basketball season has arrived.

Last week the girls completed their season and now it’s the boys turn to close things off with a bang. A total of 32 teams will take the court at MTSU’s Murphy Center over the next four days with the goal of raising gold.

I decided to take a look into each bracket for the classes and pick a winner for each. Here’s a look at who I have winning state titles on Saturday:

Class 4A: Hillsboro 66, Whitehaven 65

These two teams met back on January 25 in a neutral site game at McCallie. It was the Tigers who came out on top that afternoon by a score of 58-47.

I think these time around the Burros get some revenge.

Both teams are hot entering the state tournament are presumed by many as the tournament favorites. It would be fitting for both to keep winning and set up a rematch that everyone hopes to see.

Cortez Graham-Howard has been a mainstay on the Metro Nashville boys basketball scene and I think it’s time he leads the Burros to their first gold ball.

Class 3A: Hume-Fogg 53, Tullahoma 48

Admittedly I think the winner of the 3A tournament comes out of the top half of the bracket between Greeneville, Hume-Fogg and Upperman.

I’ll be a homer and take the Blue Knights.

I’ve seen this team enough to know that they’re a state title contender. They may not be the best shooting team in the tournament but the Blue Knights dominate the paint like no other getting multiple shots at the basket.

If Miles Rucker, Michael Nwoye, Alonzo Rhodes, Isiah Ring and Samuel Craddock can get their jumpers to fall to compliment that suffocating defense, I wouldn’t bet against the Blue Knights from winning their first state title in 100 years.

Class 2A: Loretto 72, Alcoa 69

It’s a three-horse race in Class 2A between Alcoa, Loretto and Tyner Academy. While two of those teams have suffered losses this year, the Mustangs have not.

Greg Tipps has one of its best teams ever and that’s saying something.

A convincing win over Tyner Academy in the semifinals would be a positive sign heading into that potential championship matchup with Alcoa. It just feels like Loretto is due.

Class 1A: Chattanooga Prep 65, Pickett County 55

My original pick here was Eagleville so picking the team that ended their season seems like the logical choice right?

Wrong.

Chattanooga Prep is the best team in Class 1A even with all of the off-the-court stuff revolving around the school going on. It’s hard not to think that should they get past Santa Fe in the first round that they roll to gold ball again.
