Week 5 Girls Basketball Rankings: PCA continues to roll

Four weeks into the season and we’re prepping for holiday tournaments and district play starting to ramp up.

As January nears, we’re also getting a better picture of who the top teams in the area are just over a month into the season. Turning our attention fully to basketball and the latest large and small class area rankings.

Large Class teams include 4A, 3A, and Division II-AA. Small Class teams include 4A, 3A, and Division II-AA.

Here’s a look at the top 20 teams in our area entering the fifth week of the season.

Large Class

1 . Lipscomb Academy (8-0): The Lady Mustangs have yet to really be challenged this season. After beating Ravenwood 57-16, Rockvale gave them their closest game of the season so far in a 76-64 win for Lipscomb.

2. Father Ryan (8-0): The Lady Irish had no issues against the Tennessee Heat but faced a challenge from two teams out of Kentucky. They ended up winning both games beating Calloway County 48-43 and Daviess County 51-50.

3. Nolensville (7-1): The Lady Knights crushed Spring Hill 57-19 on Monday. A few days later they played Independence in their first district game and left with a narrow 44-39 win.

4. Page (7-2): After surviving a 39-36 scare from Hendersonville, the Lady Patriots cruised past Ravenwood 71-42 for their first district win.

5. Clarksville (7-0): Malon Smith has become the focal point in the Lady Wildcats’ attack and proving to be one of the best around. She scored 19 in a 54-14 win over Kenwood and 21 in a 66-27 win over West Creek.

6. CPA (5-1): It was a week where the Lady Lions won both a blowout and a game they had to sweat out until the end. They opened the week beating Lawson 74-27 and closed it with a 51-49 overtime win over Liberty Creek.

7. Harpeth Hall (5-1): The Honeybears rolled past LaVergne 45-20 for their fifth win in their first six games top open the season.

8. Ensworth (4-2): Since back-to-back losses to Bradley Central and Coffee County, the Lady Tigers have rattled off three straight wins. They picked up two last week in convincing fashion beating Baylor 61-27 and Rockvale 75-58.

9. Rossview (7-2): The week was a mixed bag for the Lady Hawks. They suffered losses to Dickson County (47-46) and North Hopkins (Ky.) (55-40) but sandwiched a 66-42 win over Kenwood in between.

10. Stewarts Creek (7-4): Make it three straight wins for the Lady Red Hawks since their last loss. They beat Warren County 45-36 on Tuesday and rolled past Gallatin 75-23 on Friday.

Who just missed out: Brentwood (6-2), Lebanon (4-4)

Small Class

1. East Nashville (9-0): The season keeps rolling along and the Lady Eagles keep on rolling. In their wins over LaVergne and McGavock, they won by an average of 37.5 points.

2. Ezell-Harding (8-0): In a battle between two of the area’s top DII-A programs, Ezell emerged on top outlasting Nashville Christian 48-46. They played Clarksville Academy a few days later and won that game 65-42.

3. Nashville Christian (6-1): The Lady Eagles rebounded from their two-point loss to Ezell-Harding by beating Friendship Christian 49-6 and MTCS 48-43.

4. Providence Christian (6-2): The Lady Lions won five straight and done so in convincing fashion. Last week they beat BGA 56-40 and FRA 49-37.

5. Goodpasture (3-3): After a second loss to Lipscomb Academy the week before, the Lady Cougars recovered with two wins last week. They first beat Friendship Christian 36-27 and then beat Davidson Academy by 20.

6. Smith County (7-3): White County got the best of the Lady Owls by 17 on Monday. They rebounded from that loss by beating Gordonsville 49-35.

7. Liberty Creek (6-2): After starting the season off with six straight wins, the Lady Wolves suffered back-to-back losses. The first was to CPA in overtime and the second came by 12 to Hendersonville.

8. Cannon County (7-3): Like Smith County, the Lionettes suffered a loss to White County last week. They recovered from that loss to by beating Grundy County 52-42 and Central Magnet 42-28.

9. Sycamore (5-3): A loss to Stewart County made for a rough opening to the week for the Lady War Eagles but they did get revenge against Cheatham County by a score of 44-35.

10. Cheatham County (6-3): The loss to Sycamore ended a four-game winning streak for the Lady Cubs. They did get a 61-19 win over Montgomery Central earlier in the week.

Who just missed out: East Robertson (4-2), FRA (6-4)
