Picking our favorite under-the-radar players in the 615 Preps coverage area

0 0

With our coverage area, we’re lucky enough to cover some of the state’s best players regardless of class.

Several of those kids will go on and play college ball at the highest level or end the season winning Mr. Football awards. However, there are several more players who remain “under-the-radar” for whatever reason.

We decided to take a look at several of those players in our coverage area and came up with some names of players we think fit that bill.

SPEARS: Who I think should be this year’s Mr. Football winners

WEEK 12 RANKINGS: Green Hill finishes regular season unbeaten

Cam: Kade Perry, Westmoreland

Perry may not have eye popping numbers in the stat sheet, but having seen Westmoreland a couple times this season, one thing was clear: He is a stone cold, level-headed, hard working leader.

When he throws the ball he’s accurate and precise. Aside from that, it’s the little things like patrolling the secondary at his safety spot and even more noticeably lining up at tight end when the Eagles go into their heavy wildcat package with star tailback Cooper White.

I would take a Kade Perry on my team any day.

Chris: William Wiebush, Page

I am a sucker for versatile players. William Wiebush fits that mold to a T.

He stabilized Page’s quarterback position, gave them a receiving threat and oh, by the way, is an anchor of the state’s top-ranked scoring defense. The Patriots have Power Four talent at every level of that defense and Wiebush helps lock down the back end of it. Eric Hazzard and Brenden Anes get tons of attention and rightfully so, but don’t forget the last line of defense.

Wiebush does what needs to be done and is a player I would want to play on my team pretty darn quickly.

William Wiebush(10) is the unsung hero on a Page defense that’s regarded as one of the best in the state. Scott Burton/615 Preps

Isaac: Blake Waldorf, Watertown

With a little over 2,200 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and a completion percentage of around 64% Waldorf has been the general for Watertown’s offense.

Only a sophomore, he has led his team to the playoffs, and will only improve as time goes on.

Joe: Omeiza Danyian, Green Hill

A lot is made out about Green Hill’s offense and for good reason. The Hawks can put up points and they can put them up quickly.

However, the Hawks’ defense has arguably been their biggest strength this season and that starts with Danyian.

I noticed Danyian during the Kirkwood scrimmage during the spring and I’ve been a fan since.

This kid plays with a high motor and is the type of player you want leading you defense. He sets the tone and the rest of the defense seemingly follows.

Scott: Austin Mayfield, Ravenwood

Ravenwood has no shortage of star power on their roster, when you are watching the
players, take a break and watch the ball. Odds are that you will spot 22 nearby.

Austin Mayfield, the 6-foot-0, 210 edge rusher leads the Raptors with 15 tackles for loss and seven sacks on the season and is a big part of Ravenwood’s perfect regular season.

An intelligent player, he reads plays well and often gets to the ball carrier before they can get to the hole. He has a very quick burst off the line and has the strength to take on double teams. His 44 tackles and 2
interceptions are a large contribution to a defense that has allowed only 7.4 points per game
and has pitched 4 shutouts.

Tyson: Clayton Merrill, Brentwood

Merrill is everything you want in a receiver. Not only is he an elite route runner with sure hands, but once he has the ball in his hands, he can make one of the best defenses in 6A look lost.

Almost every time JC White scrambles and finds a receiver, Merrill’s wide open.

In an RPO heavy offense, Merrill has to throw blocks whether he likes it or not. When asked about the prospect of doing a lot of blocking at Austin Peay, Merrill had one statement, “Oh yeah, I love blocking”. While he puts up solid numbers, his value is intangible
