615 Preps Boys Basketball Rankings: Ravenwood, Goodpasture lead initial top-15

0 0

For the first time in 615 Preps history, we’re dedicating our winter to covering the boys and girls basketball season in the 615.

With that in mind 615 Preps staff has put together a list of the top 15 large and small class teams in our coverage area following this season’s action so far.

Large Class teams include 4A, 3A and Division II-AA. Small Class teams include 2A, 1A, and Division II-A.

Large Class

1. Ravenwood (14-0): It’s been a historic start to this season for Raptors who are off to their best start in school history. The Raptors won their first 14 games by an average of 14.9 points and only had three games decided by single digits.

2. Independence (10-3): Jett Montgomery and Tylan Lewis have proven that they’re one of the best one-two punches in our coverage area leading the Eagles to a fast start. Their only losses have come to Cordova (66-64), Bartlett (67-51) and South Shore (N.Y.).

3. Brentwood Academy (9-4): The Eagles have accumulated losses to Baylor (57-51), Knox Webb (43-41), MHEA (68-62) and Bartlett (79-70) over the first month of the season. Despite those losses, the defending DII-AA champs figure to remain in the hunt to repeat thanks to Vanderbilt signee Tyler Tanner.

4. Siegel (15-2): The Stars opened the year with a 1-point loss to LaVergne and also have a 13-point loss to Brentwood Academy. Aside from those two results, it’s been smooth sailing so far in a season that’s seen wins over teams like Pope John Paul II and Upperman.

5. Pope John Paul II (12-2): So far Baylor and Siegel are the only two teams who have gotten the best of the Knights beating them by 11 total points. With five players averaging double figures, Pope’s winning by an average of 20.7 points.

6. Overton (11-2)

7. Green Hill (11-3)

8. Father Ryan (13-2)

9. Hillsboro (6-2)

10. Blackman (9-4)

11. Brentwood (10-1)

12. Beech (13-3)

13. Franklin (8-4)

14. Nolensville (11-2)

15. LaVergne (11-5)

Small Class

1. Goodpasture (12-2): Led by a sure-fire Mr. Basketball finalist in Jayden Jones, the defending DII-A champions are off to another hot start. Putting aside losses to CPA and Marshall County (Ky.), the Cougars have been stacking up wins including a 30-point home win over rival Clarksville Academy.

2. PCA (11-2): If there was an area team that could challenge Goodpasture for the DII-A title, it might just be PCA. After back-to-back losses to CPA (86-78) and Brentwood Academy (69-62) to start the year, the Lions have rattled off 11 straight wins.

3. BGA (14-2): The Wildcats are also right in the mix to contend with Goodpasture. In their two losses to Cookeville and PCA, BGA lost by a total of five points and have a 63-43 win over Lipsomb Academy as their highlight win of the season so far.

4. Whites Creek (11-4): Don’t sleep on the Cobras who have only lost to teams in a class higher than them so far this season. Whites Creek has been rolling for the most part dismantling most competition in their class but also have a seven-point win over Lipscomb Academy.

5. East Nashville (6-4): The Eagles are much like Whites Creek only suffering losses to teams in Class 4A and one out of state team so far. While they’re far from a finished product and are replacing several key pieces from last year’s team, Avery Patton’s squad will only get better as the season goes on.
