Team of the Year: MTCS Cougars

Going 12-1 and winning the DII-A title, the MTCS Cougars are the 615 Preps Small Class team of the year.

The Cougars’ state title run included a pair of wins over Columbia Academy and Friendship Christian. They would go on to beat the Commanders 28-13 in the championship game. MTCS’ lone loss of the year was on the road to eventual Class 1A state champion South Pittsburg.

Player of the Year: Tyson Wolcott, Friendship Christian, Sr.

Wolcott had an unforgettable season that ended with him being a Mr. Football finalist and setting the season record for rushing touchdowns.

When it was all said and done, he had run for 3,027 yards and 54 touchdowns. He was also one of Friendship’s top defensive players recording 78 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, two blocked kicks, two sacks, and an interception.

Athlete of the Year: Eli Wilson, MTCS, Sr.

Wilson proved that he should have been in the Mr. Football discussion with his play at the end of the season. He led MTCS to its first state championship game and was named the game’s MVP.

For the year he ran for 2,131 yards and 34 touchdowns while also hauling in two receiving touchdowns. On defense, he recorded 33 tackles, two interceptions, a tackle for loss, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Offensive Player of the Year: Isaiah Groves, East Robertson, Jr.

Groves made history this season leading East Robertson to its first-ever state title appearance. He also became the school’s first Mr. Football winner since 1994.

During that run, he ran for 3,085 yards and 31 touchdowns averaging 207 yards per game and 11.1 yards per carry. Groves was also one of the Indians’ top receiving threats with 269 yards and five touchdowns on 14 receptions.

Defensive Player of the Year: Jordan Houston, East Nashville, Sr.

Houston was the key to East Nashville’s dominant defense. Whether it was blowing up plays before they got started or returning interceptions for six, Houston was everywhere on the field for the Eagles.

In East’s run back to the Class 3A championship, Houston recorded 103 total tackles, six interceptions, two sacks, and scored eight defensive touchdowns.

Lineman of the Year: Jesse Perry, MTCS, Sr.

It doesn’t matter that Perry played DII-A ball, he was one of the best linemen in this state this season regardless of class. The Tennessee commitment anchored an offensive line that helped the Cougars rush for 4,197 yards, 61 touchdowns, and an average of 322.8 yards per game on the ground.

Perry was also one of the best players defensively for the Cougars. On that side of the ball, he recorded 43 tackles, four tackles for a loss, and blocked four extra points.

Special Teams Player of the Year: Peyton Hix, Smith County, Sr.

Hix did a little bit of everything for the Owls this year including handling their punting duties. On his 29 punts, Hix had an average of 40 yards and pinned 10 inside the opponent’s 20 putting the Owls defense in a great spot several times.

Coach of the Year: Christian Peterson, MTCS

In his first year as MTCS’ head coach, Peterson led the Cougars to their first-ever state title. Peterson was the easy choice here, leading MTCS to its first-ever state title appearance and bringing home the gold ball in that appearance.
