After nine games in Chattanooga, the 2023 high school football season has come to an end. three area teams brought home gold as champions while five brought home runner-up silver.
The 615 Preps staff has put together a list of the top five large, medium, and small class teams in our coverage area following last week’s action.
Large Class teams include 6A and Division II-AAA. Medium Class teams include 5A, 4A, and Division II-AA. Small Class teams include 3A, 2A, 1A, and Division II-A, and each grouping has roughly 30 teams in it.
Large Class
1. Oakland (12-3, last week’s ranking: 1): The Patriots’ 3-year run at the top of Class 6A came to a screeching halt Saturday night in a 24-9 loss to Houston. Turnovers plagued Oakland in the loss as they threw three interceptions and also lost a fumble.
2. Brentwood (13-1, last week’s ranking: 2): Brentwood’s season came to an end with a 28-0 loss to Houston in the semifinals.
3. Riverdale (10-3, last week’s ranking: 3): Riverdale’s season came to an end with a 56-0 loss to Oakland in the quarterfinals.
4. Ravenwood (9-4, last week’s ranking: 4): Ravenwood’s season came to an end with a 27-20 loss to Brentwood in the quarterfinals.
5. MBA (5-7, last week’s ranking: 5): MBA’s season came to an end with a 33-15 loss to McCallie in the semifinals.
Medium Class
1. Pearl-Cohn (15-0, last week’s ranking: 1): The dream season came to an end with a 36-27 win over Upperman. Mr. Football finalist Zeion Simpson-Smith ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns as the Firebirds won their first state title since 1997.
2. CPA (13-1, last week’s ranking: 2): Back on top, the Lions had no issues dispatching Boyd-Buchanan 35-13 for the DII-AA title. CPA limited Boyd to less than 200 yards of total offense while Crews Law finished his high school career as the game’s MVP.
3. Page (13-2, last week’s ranking: 3): Down 17 late in the third, the Patriots had a comeback for the ages making it a five-point game late. That comeback fell a play short as West was able to hold on for the 24-19 win.
4. FRA (11-2, last week’s ranking: 4): FRA’s season came to an end with a 37-16 loss to CPA in the semifinals.
5. Macon County (11-2, last week’s ranking: 5): Macon County’s season came to an end with a 17-14 loss to Upperman in the quarterfinals.
Small Class
1. MTCS (12-1, last week’s ranking: 1): Snubbed for Mr. Football, Eli Wilson played angry rushing for 190 yards, a rushing touchdown, scored on a fumble recovery and hauled in a pick as the Cougars beat Friendship Christian 28-13 for the DII-A title. The win gave the Cougars their first state title in school history.
2. East Nashville (12-3, last week’s ranking: 3): For the third straight year the Eagles fell to Alcoa losing this time 42-20. Sophomore running back Kelan Anderson was a bright spot for the Eagles rushing for 258 yards and two touchdowns including a state record 99-yard touchdown run.
3. East Robertson (13-2, last week’s ranking: 4): In a defensive slugfest, the Indians were limited to 220 total yards of offense in a 13-7 loss to Riverside. Mr. Football finalist Isaiah Groves ran for 112 yards and scored East’s lone touchdown.
4. Friendship Christian (11-3, last week’s ranking: 2): Tyson Wolcott ran for 225 yards and two touchdowns but the Commanders defense couldn’t get the stops they needed to beat MTCS.
5. Smith County (10-3, last week’s ranking: 5): Smith County’s season came to an end with a 49-20 loss to East Robertson in the quarterfinals.
