Opening Drive (Nov. 4): Second season

0 0

Now, the real fun begins. Playoff time is here, and it’s time to raise the stakes.

All of the brackets are set with the exception of the teams from Region 5-1A (more on that below), and they’re all in action this week except Division II-Class AAA and teams with first-round byes.

One focus this week will be on the margin of victory in some of these games, as the first round tends to have some big mismatches. With the current playoff qualification system, 39 teams statewide in Division I qualified with losing records (before Region 5-1 is settled), and of those 39, seven had two wins and three teams made it with 1-9 records. Meanwhile, Montgomery Central goes 7-3 and will be watching the playoffs from home, simply because they lost the wrong three games.

It can be done with a losing record – just ask Stratford last season. We’ll see if any of those teams can find the spark to make a similar run this time around.
