Week 2 Top 10 area games: Intriguing matchups line the second week slate

Week 1 gave us upsets, statement wins, and plenty of surprises. Now, the stakes get even higher with these 10 matchups to watch in Week 2.
We combed through the list of games and nailed down our top 10 for Week 2. Here’s a little bit about each one that made our list.
Spotlight Game: Lipscomb Academy at Ravenwood
Get your popcorn ready! These two have a knack for playing each other close.
Lipscomb Academy heads to Brentwood after a tough overtime loss to McCallie, but the Mustangs showed they can hang with one of the state’s best. Ravenwood enters fresh off a win over Madison Ridgeland Academy (Miss.), led by Caden Pace’s 94 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Last year Ravenwood knocked off Lipscomb Academy by one point, you can expect another close one between these two.
CPA at Pearl-Cohn (Thursday)
I’m not sure if there are any teams in the state more angry than these two.
CPA is coming off a rough loss to Oakland, while Pearl-Cohn surrendered a home game to crosstown rival MBA. The Firebirds did find a bright spot in Mikhai Moshay who recorded two pick-sixes.
CPA won last year’s matchup 42-34, but Pearl-Cohn will be looking to flip the script this time around.
Brentwood at Brentwood Academy
The Battle of Granny White Pike is always one of the most highly anticipated matchups in the area.
Brentwood comes off a one-point win over Smyrna, while Brentwood Academy returns home after a nationally televised loss to Baylor. Despite the loss, the Eagles showed plenty of promise, especially on defense and through the connection between Crews Jenkins and Kesean Bowman.
Both teams enter with plenty to prove, making this a matchup worth keeping an eye on.
East Nashville at Antioch
There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned Metro matchup.
Both teams enter riding high after big Week 1 wins. East Nashville knocked off Collierville in a potential upset, while Antioch handled Mount Juliet. Last year, the Bears got the better of the Eagles behind the connection between brothers Andre and Aaden Adams.
Antioch looks to prove last year was no fluke, while East Nashville hunts for revenge.
Franklin at Gallatin
Great offense vs. great defense, a football game can’t get better than that. Franklin head coach Josh Adkins returns to Gallatin for the first time since he was an assistant with the Green Wave.
Both teams are coming off huge wins. Franklin blew out LaVergne, while Gallatin held off rival Hendersonville in a close matchup. Gallatin’s K’Saun Barksdale is one to watch after scoring twice last week, while Franklin lit up the scoreboard with 40 points.
Both teams enter undefeated, setting up a matchup between two teams with plenty of momentum.
Gordonsville at Watertown
Small-town football is back as these two 2A and 3A squads meet in Week 2.
Gordonsville comes off a massive one-score win over 1A powerhouse Coalfield, while Watertown showed off its offense behind senior wideout Carmello Davis, who hauled in 11 catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Smith County.
Both teams enter with momentum and plenty to prove in this small-town showdown.
Green Hill at Page
Green Hill hasn’t lost on the road in quite some time, and Page quite frankly just hasn’t lost.
Last season, Page put up 44 points on the Hawks, but Green Hill showed promise last week by holding a dangerous Beech squad to just 13 points. Page stayed true to its offensive identity, dropping 48 on Giles County behind Cameron Kruse’s four passing touchdowns and Isaac Otey’s 204 rushing yards.
Green Hill looks to knock off the defending 5A state champions, while Page looks to protect home turf.
Nashville Christian at Ensworth
This matchup did not disappoint last season at all, and we could be in for another good one.
Both teams showed similar results from Week 1, holding their opponent to just seven points while scoring at least four touchdowns. Eagles quarterback Tate Mathis connected with three different receivers for passing touchdowns.
Now, the Tigers’ defense will have to slow down that passing attack while looking to make scores of their own, just as they did against a strong Whitehaven squad if they hope to avenge last year’s overtime loss at Nashville Christian.
Station Camp at Rockvale
Points, points, and did I mention points?
These offenses love being in the end zone. Station Camp dropped 50 points last week due to Colton Overbey’s five passing touchdowns. Rockvale, meanwhile, cruised past Independence 24-7 in a dominant Week 1 showing.
Last season Station Camp narrowly edged Rockvale by just one point, this year the Rockets look to keep pace and establish-hard nosed defense.
Westmoreland at Macon County
Some more small-town ball closes our Top Ten Games of the Week.
Westmoreland heads to Macon County for the Battle of Highway 52. The Eagles put up 43 points in Kentucky last week, while the Tigers handled Fulton in Knoxville. Both teams are coming off wins and will bring plenty of physicality.
Macon County won by 20 last year, but Westmoreland looks to flip the script and carry its high-powered offense into Week 2.
