We’re putting a bow on the high school basketball season with some all-area team selections.

Kicking things off, we’re taking a look at the top girls players in the area who played for large class programs. The 615 Preps large class coverage area includes teams in Division II-AA as well as Classes 4A and 3A.

Players selected to these teams are selected based on their season-long stats and nominations from their head coaches. Here’s a look at those selected to the 615 Preps large class boys teams:

Player of the Year: Trey Pearson, Pope John Paul II, Sr.

Pearson, a High Point commitment, may not have been the area’s highest-scoring player or grabbed the most rebounds but it’s hard to argue that there was a player in the 615 as complete of a player.

On the year Pearson 17.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.7 steals but saw his numbers rise significantly in region play. He closed out the year with multiple triple-double performances and capped a long high school career as a Mr. Basketball finalist and in the DII-AA state championship game.

Coach of the Year: John Ferguson, Portland

Portland head coach John Ferguson

Just a year removed from a 12-17 record, Ferguson led his alma mater to arguably its best season since he was a player.

Portland finished 28-7, finished first in District 9-5A, won both the district and region tournament while also making it to the state tournament for the first time since 2003. The Panthers finished the season winning nine of its last 10 games with the only loss coming to Knox Fulton by nine in the Class 3A state tournament.

Team of the Year: Brentwood Bruins

Expectations were high for the Bruins going into the season and for the most part, they lived up to the hype against one of the state’s hardest schedule’s.

Brentwood finished the year 30-4 suffering losses to Lipscomb Academy, Nolensville and to a pair of state champions in Bartlett and Briarcrest Christian. The Bruins had some of the best wins of any team around beating Upperman, Alcoa, Blackman, BGA, Whitehaven, and only losing once in district play.

They also gave nationally-ranked Bartlett their closest game in the Class 4A state tournament keeping within single-digits until late in the game.
