Postseason basketball has arrived.
While some teams just began, Division II programs advanced to their region tournaments with hopes of securing spots in the quarterfinals scheduled for next week.
Based on last week’s results, our staff took some time to rank this week’s top five large and small class programs. The rankings are based on an average of where our staff ranked the teams.
Large Class teams include 4A, 3A, and Division II-AA. Small Class teams include 2A, 1A, and Division II-A.
Here’s a look at the top girls teams in our area entering the third week of February.
Large Class
1. CPA (25-2): In a region tournament that featured a couple of eye-raising upsets, the Lady Lions reigned supreme with a pair of dominant victories. They crushed Father Ryan 54-27 and then beat Lipscomb Academy 54-38 for the program’s first Division II region championship.
2. Blackman (23-3): Postseason play began for the Lady Blaze with a matchup against La Vergne. They cruised in that game winning 53-21.
3. Nolensville (24-4): It was a tale of two games last week for the Lady Knights. They got all they could handle in a 44-40 win over Hendersonville but rolled over Centennial 65-15.
4. Lipscomb Academy (24-7): A massive run propelled the Lady Mustangs past Harpeth Hall 56-17 in the region tournament semifinals. However, they could not replicate that success against CPA.
5. Page (21-6): The Lady Patriots only played once last week and were dominant in that showing as they crushed Summit 72-48.
Who just missed out: Mt. Juliet (22-8), Green Hill (24-3)
Small Class
1. PCA (24-5): After losing to MTCS in the district tournament final, the Lady Lions got some revenge pulling away late to beat the Lady Cougars 59-47 for the DII-A Middle Region championship.
2. MTCS (24-4): Despite losing to PCA for the region championship, the Lady Cougars still had an impressive showing in the region tournament beating Clarksville Academy (59-48) and Ezell-Harding (69-49).
3. East Nashville (19-3): Stratford didn’t pose much of a threat to the Lady Eagles in either of their games as East Nashville rolled 66-29 and 100-33.
4. Ezell-Harding (31-2): The Lady Eagles suffered their first double-digit loss of the season to MTCS but still took home third in the region by avenging their district championship loss to Nashville Christian by a score of 58-42.
5. Pearl-Cohn (21-5): In back-to-back games against LEAD Academy, the Lady Firebirds rolled. They won the first 69-32 and the second 100-33.
Who just missed out: Smith County (19-10), Nashville Christian (18-11)
