Oakland’s Craig Tutt ties championship record in blowout finale

Superman showed up Saturday night in Chattanooga.

He arrived at Finley Stadium not wearing a red cape, but a white helmet and navy uniform. His name also wasn’t Clark Kent.

Oakland senior and Ole Miss signee Craig Tutt arrived on the scene with one mission in mind: win the damn game.

Tutt did that and then some. Rushing for 230 yards and tying a state championship record with seven touchdowns, Tutt carried the Patriots to a dominant 62-21 Class 6A championship win over Ravenwood.

“Honestly I was just out here playing my game,” Tutt said beaming as he carried his MVP plaque off of the field. “The team needed me at running back and I did a good job. What happened against them last year was really motivation for us much as us wanting to win another state championship.

…my sophomore year I went home crying and told myself I’d never do that again. Realizing that this was my last game, I wanted to go out swinging and I feel like I did just that.”

Oakland’s Craig Tutt (1) closed his career with one of best individual performances in state championship history.

On the biggest stages, Tutt has done nothing but shine for the Patriots.

Just two weeks ago with the Patriots trailing Green Hill in the fourth quarter of that quarterfinal matchup, he’s the one who scored and got them rolling again.

A week later against Blackman, Tutt accounted for 234 total yards and scored four times to send the Patriots back to Chattanooga.

Saturday night in a showdown of the top two teams in Class 6A, Tutt had his magnus opus.

“Craig’s a guy that plays every snap of special teams, every snap on defense and a lot on offense,” Oakland head coach Kevin Creasy said. “He’s a tremendous high school football player and he’s going to be a tremendous talent in college.

…ultimately, that guy deserves all of the accolades he gets.”

Kevin Creasy adds to status as an all-time graphic

Not that many folks doubted Creasy’s status as an all-time great heading into Saturday night, but the evening proved to be his greatest showing as well.

Championship No. 9 for Creasy was the biggest blowout win for one of his teams between both tenures at Oakland and Trousdale County.

Creasy’s average margin of victory in those nine championship wins is 23.1 points. When it comes to just Oakland’s title wins, that average jumps up to 29.3 points.

“I think it’s special any time you get to play in Chattanooga and play for a state championship,” Creasy said. “This Ravenwood team was one of the best in the state and for our guys to respond the way they did tonight, it just speaks volumes about our senior class and how hard they worked. Our coaches did a heck of a job not only preparing them this week, but every week.

…it’s hard to 15-0 in this state.”
