Cutter Sisk has Beech sailing at half-way point of the season.
As a sophomore the 6-foot-8 Sisk showed Buccaneers fans glimpses of what could be their future with him leading the way. A year later he’s put together a Mr. Basketball-caliber season through the first two months.
His growth was on full display Tuesday night. Sisk scored 26 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the Buccaneers past Oakland 61-47.
“In the offseason I did a ton of training,” Sisk said on his offseason improvements. “Whether it was the the team running sprints on the hill or on my own with my shooting trainer, I put a lot of work in. I also couldn’t do any of what I’ve done without my teammates getting me the ball the way they have.”
Entering the night Sisk was averaging 22.3 points and 9.4 rebounds for the Buccaneers (12-5). From the onset he proved to be a mismatch for the Patriots (7-8).
Even when Oakland began to double-team him, Sisk was able to either get the ball to his teammates or finish at the rim.
“He knows teams are going to be double teaming him and triple teaming him,” Beech head coach Kip Brown said. “He knows to be creative and find the open man and to play through it. His biggest thing is that he just keeps working.
…Cutter’s got a high basketball IQ and he loves the game. Whatever he did tonight, he knows that he needs to keep working which is what makes him such a great kid to coach.”
Scoring and rebounding the ball may be where Sisk is at his best but his vision at the position is what makes him one of the area’s best.
The Buccaneers have plenty of other scorers like TJ Ruffin and Kajuan Harris who can score at any moment. With Sisk receiving so much attention and his ability to distribute, it just makes the team better.
“It’s great having him,” Ruffin said. “He helps with rebounds and passes the ball out as soon as we’re open. He gets everyone involved even when he’s getting double teamed and that’s led to us scoring a lot of points.”
