Week 16 football rankings: Macon County, Oakland, Page make it to state

The semifinals are officially over and this year’s nine state championship matchups are set.

Our coverage area will be well-represented next week in Chattanooga with nine of our teams advancing to play in five the nine championship matchups.

Last week’s results also brought a few changes in this week’s area rankings.

The 615 Preps staff has put together a list of the top five large, medium, and small class teams in our coverage area following last week’s action. This rankings are based off of results, head-to-head matchups and current form for teams.

Large Class teams include 6A and Division II-AAA. Medium Class teams include 5A, 4A, and Division II-AA. Small Class teams include 3A, 2A, 1A, and Division II-A, and each grouping has roughly 30 teams in it.

Large Class

1. Oakland (13-1): After getting bottled up in the first half, Tennessee commitment Daune Morris picked up steam over the final 24 minutes rushing for 132 yards and two touchdowns to beat Maryville 21-13. Up next: vs. Houston (12-2)

2. Ravenwood (13-1): A dream season for the Raptors came to an end at Houston. The Mustangs scored with four minutes remaining and got a few defensive stops to pick up the 24-21 win.

3. Ensworth (11-1): The Tigers’ season came to an end on November 22 in a 31-7 loss to McCallie.

4. Riverdale (10-3): The Warriors’ season came to an end on November 22 in a 49-46 loss to Oakland..

5. Stewarts Creek (11-2): The Red Hawks’ season came to an end on November 22 in a 38-14 loss to Ravenwood.

Medium Class

1. Page (14-0): Trailing for the first time all season, the Patriots never faltered. They scored 31 straight to beat Springfield 31-7 and advance back to the Class 5A championship. Up next: vs. Sevier County (14-0)

2. CPA (13-0): The Lions were off last week. Up next: vs. BGA (11-2)

3. BGA (11-2): The Wildcats were off last week Up next: vs. CPA (13-1)

4. Macon County (12-2): Welcome to Chattanooga Tiger fans! Macon County beat Anderson County 43-41 behind a 285-yard and three touchdown performance from Gabe Border to play for the school’s first football state title. vUp next: vs. Melrose (11-3)

5. Springfield (8-6): The Yellow Jackets weren’t able to crack Page’s stout defense after scoring on their first drive of the night.

Small Class

1. Nashville Christian (11-1): The Eagles were off last week. Up next: vs. Columbia Academy (10-3)

2. East Nashville (10-3): Graham Simpson threw his first interception against the Eagles and they looked to be in a great spot to spring the upset. However, Simpson was 18-of-18 over his final 18 passes to lead the Chargers to the Class 2A title with a 50-36 win over East.

3. Westmoreland (10-3): The Eagles’ season came to an end on November 22 in a 14-7 loss to Marion County.

4. White House Heritage (9-4): The Patriots” season came to an end on November 22 in a 42-7 loss to East Nashville.

5. DCA (10-3): The Wildcats’ season came to an end on November 22 in a 47-13 loss to Columbia Academy.
