Andre Adams’ four touchdown passes propels Antioch to 34-22 season-opening win over Lebanon

The buzz surrounding Antioch sophomore quarterback Andre Adams was at a fever pitch entering the season. Following a breakout freshman campaign, many wondered what was next for the 15-year-old standout signal-caller.

Adams answered those questions Friday night passing for four touchdowns and leading Antioch to a 34-22 and avenging last season’s loss to Lebanon.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment all year,” Adams said. “We wanted our get back so bad. We started off slow and made some mistakes but we pulled it off.”

It wasn’t a perfect night for Adams and the Bears offense.

Antioch struggled to get much done on its first few drives as Lebanon quickly jumped out to a two-touchdown lead. Part of that lead came as Adams was sacked in the end zone for a safety.

“He can work on getting the ball out quicker and time management,” Antioch coach Arcentae Broome said of Adams. “When it’s not there, pull it down, run and just do what you normally do. Do what your normally do and don’t try to be anything else.

…that boy’s 15 and at the end of the day, to come back and do what he did at that age, it’s ridiculous. He’s a big-time ball player.”

The Bears’ defense settled in early in the second quarter and gave its offense a chance to work. Adams and his receivers did the rest.

Over the final 7:45 of the first half, Adams threw for three touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns came in the final three minutes of the quarter. He connected with Coby Belton on a 72-yarder with 2:23 remaining in he quarter and a 10-yard strike to Khalil Ferguson with seven seconds remaining.

The second half was plagued with penalties and both offenses struggling to get into any rhythm. Adams finally got Antioch’s going late in the third with a 30-yard touchdown reception to Jayden Fowler.

Adams wouldn’t throw another touchdown pass but the damage was done. Lebanon brought the game back within six late in the fourth but a long touchdown run by Jahkai Bonner Brown with under three minutes to go and another defensive stop sealed the deal.

“This shows that we know how to fight through adversity,” Adams said. “We’ve been working on that. Tonight we came out on top.”
