Between district championships, region openers and even some state tournament qualifies, last week was a busy week for the basketball scene in Middle Tennessee.

Large Class teams include 4A, 3A, and Division II-AA. Small Class teams include 2A, 1A, and Division II-A.

Rankings are based on overall success and current form for each teams. While teams may have beaten each other earlier in the season, we look at the current form of teams compared to each other.

With that in mind, here’s a look at this week’s 615 Preps large and small class boys rankings:

Large Class

1. Pope John Paul II (26-4): Led by 21 points from sophomore standout Trey Pearson, the Knights held home court beating Baylor 54-43. The win propelled Pope to its first ever final four appearance.

2 Hillsboro (22-3): A week off from play didn’t hinder the Burros as they crushed Gallatin 69-44 to open region play.

3. Brentwood Academy (23-7): Led by 23 points from Tyler Tanner and 16 from George MacIntyre, the Eagles made their trip west worth it with a 57-45 win over Christian Brothers.

4. Independence (27-6): It was a week of blowout wins for the Eagles. They beat Brentwood 53-36 for the District 10-4A title on Tuesday and followed it up with a 68-27 win over Lincoln County to open the Region 5-4A tournament.

5. Hume-Fogg (21-4) After opening the week with 10-point win over Lawson for the District 10-3A title, the Blue Knights opened the Region 5-3A tournament in style. Hume-Fogg dominated the second half of their game against Greenbrier en route to a 66-31 win over the Bobcats.

Small Class

1. PCA (26-4): In what was a crowded DII-A field here in Middle Tennessee, the Lions were the last team in the area standing. They beat TCA 68-57 to secure their spot in Cookeville as the Midstate’s lone representative in the DII-A final four.

2. Whites Creek (21-5): Round three between the Eagles and Cobras once again went Whites Creek’s way as the two squared off for the District 7-2A title. While East Nashville kept it close, Whites Creek was able to hold on for the 39-38 win.

3. Cannon County (22-7): The Lions had more than a week off between their district championship and region tournament opener. That time off didn’t hurt them in any way as they cruised to a 77-51 win over Lewis County.

4. Goodpasture (26-7): The Cougars were able to keep their season alive early in the week narrowly beating Boyd-Buchanan 51-50. They weren’t able to repeat that success against ECS though losing to the Eagles 72-50.
