Page’s furious rally falls short as Powell claims 5A title

0 0

Page came within a couple of plays of forcing overtime in the Class 5A BlueCross Bowl championship game, but Powell knocked down a last-gasp pass to defeat the Patriots 42-34 at Chattanooga’s Finley Stadium.

Notes from the game:

How it went down: Mistakes put Page in a 21-0 hole after one quarter, but that deficit was almost completely erased in the second. The Patriots attempted a fake extra point to try and take the lead before the half, but it failed and Powell led 21-20 at the half. The Panthers scored twice in the third quarter and led by 15 with 5:52 left after Jordyn Potts’ fourth touchdown pass of the evening. Jake McNamara hit Boyce Smith for a touchdown with 49 seconds to play, then the Patriots recovered an onside kick. Page drove to the Powell 33-yard line to get one final shot at the end zone, but it was knocked away to end the game.

Notable numbers: Powell’s defense sacked McNamara six times in the contest and put him under pressure numerous other times … Page outgained Powell 392-362 … Page was 12-of-22 on third-down conversions and 3-of-5 on fourth down … Page had the ball for 29:29 in the game … Powell averaged 13.5 yards per completion.

Turning point: Potts hit Ayden Greene for a 33-yard score with 5:52 to play, putting Powell up 15 and forcing Page to use timeouts earlier than they wanted to preserve time.

Key performers: Potts won Most Valuable Player honors with 24-of-30 passing for 324 yards and four touchdowns … All four of Powell’s receivers (Greene, Jayden Collins, Adarius Redmond and Jason Foust) each had at least 50 receiving yards and a touchdown … Cannon Lusby led Powell with 14 total tackles (10 solo) … McNamara completed 32-of-56 passes for 291 yards and four touchdowns … Boyce Smith caught two touchdown passes, while Michael Mayer had eight receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown … Cavin Ashman had eight total tackles (seven solo) and a sack to lead the Page defense.
