The Saturday Six – Week 8

0 0

Six notable games and how those teams are impacted by the results:

FRA 16, BGA 14: Two drives defined FRA’s critical region victory at BGA. The first one was the final drive of the first half, where – despite driving rain and high winds – junior placekicker Jack Norris hammered home a 42-yard field goal as time expired to give the Panthers a 9-7 lead. The second was the opening possession of the third quarter, where FRA marched 80 yards in 10:38, with sophomore Jeffrey Vercher (33 carries, 126 yards) going in from two yards out to provide what turned out to be the game-winning score. BGA didn’t have possession for more than 15 minutes over those two drives, and when the Wildcats did, FRA’s pass rush got home enough to disrupt Nick Semptimphelter and the BGA offense. FRA can win the Middle Region title with a victory over CPA on Nov. 1, provided CPA defeats Goodpasture next week.

MBA 15, Brentwood Academy 7: That’s four consecutive wins for the Big Red, who fought off poor weather and archrival Brentwood Academy to improve to 5-3 overall. MBA’s not locked into the No. 2 seed in the West Region yet, as MUS still has two region games remaining, so it might just come down to the final week of the regular season as to whether the Big Red will host a quarterfinal playoff game or not.

Montgomery Central 13, Springfield 10: A big win for Montgomery Central to pull into a first-place tie with Portland atop Region 5-4A. Even bigger for the Indians, considering they only have two region games remaining (at White House, vs. White House Heritage) while Creek Wood and Springfield each have three remaining. Portland’s still on the inside track to the region title, having already defeated Montgomery Central, but the Panthers also have the toughest finish of the contenders (at Springfield, vs. Creek Wood). This race will come down to the final week.

Ravenwood 24, CPA 7: It’s a shame that CPA’s overall record is what it is, due to the difficult non-region schedule the Lions have played. They’ll finish winless in non-region contests this year after Ravenwood took Thursday night’s showdown. Meanwhile, the Raptors got through two weeks without head coach Matt Daniels with two wins, and Daniels will be back on the job this week.

White House Heritage 19, White House 12: This was a must-win game for White House Heritage, as a fourth region loss would have all but eliminated the Patriots from playoff contention. White House’s playoff hopes are severely damaged, however. The Blue Devils have two ways into the postseason – win out and hope that either Creek Wood or Montgomery Central loses out. Turns out White House Heritage can help with that against Montgomery Central. Funny how some things work out.

Clarksville 57, Kenwood 7: Another region with little clarity (outside of first-place Henry County) saw things get even muddier. Clarksville’s win helped the Wildcats avoid a mess of teams with three region losses. As it is, there are now four teams with three region defeats and one of them will make the postseason. The last three weeks will determine which one does. Kenwood has the tiebreaker over both Northeast and Northwest, but the Knights need to defeat Dyer County and hope West Creek doesn’t win out.
