Several things stood out in Week 4, so let’s check them out:
Unbeatens starting to emerge: Through four weeks, 18 area teams are either 3-0 or 4-0 this season. Some of them aren’t surprises, such as Oakland, Summit, CPA, Lipscomb Academy, Davidson Academy, and DCA. Others are. Clarksville Academy, Station Camp, Montgomery Central and to a lesser extent, Page, are teams that weren’t necessarily expected to come roaring out of the gates. But here they are, so they’re worth mentioning.
4-0 (14): CPA, Clarksville Academy, Davidson Academy, DCA, Gordonsville, Lipscomb Academy, Montgomery Central, Mt. Juliet, Page, Pearl-Cohn, Pope John Paul II, Riverdale, Station Camp, Summit.
3-0 (4): Oakland, Rockvale, Smyrna, Trousdale County.
Backsliding: On the other side of the coin, 10 teams are either 0-3 or 0-4 through four weeks and find themselves scrambling to make up ground. With nearly all these teams, winning a region game or two would still get them into the playoffs, so all is not lost. But those chances are already beginning to dwindle.
0-3 (6): Antioch, Columbia Academy, Glencliff, Hillwood, Sycamore, Spring Hill.
0-4 (4): Dickson County, Franklin, Hillsboro, Westmoreland
High score alert: One game ended with a total of 95 points scored on Friday, but not the one we all might have expected. Lipscomb Academy’s tilt with Arkansas power Pulaski Academy stopped on 92 after the Mustangs’ 64-28 victory, which meant it wasn’t the highest-scoring game in the area in Week 4. That honor went to the Portland-White House game, a 55-40 victory for the Blue Devils which marks the most combined points ever scored in the series, which dates to the 1940s.
Get your 50-burgers here: Ten teams scored 50 or more points on Friday, with Clarksville Academy putting up 87 (yes, 87) points against the Tennessee Heat. Rockvale did it for the first time in school history. White House scored its most points since 2014. Lipscomb Academy has scored 60 or more in all three games on the field this season. Ensworth’s 59 points were the most the Tigers had racked up since 2012. Summit, Davidson Academy, DCA, Pope John Paul II and Middle Tennessee Christian also passed the half-century mark this past week.
Four is nice, but one QB did it twice: BGA’s Brett Brown, DCA’s Bradford Gaines, Ensworth’s Levi Moore, Independence’s Joe Cummings, Page’s Jake McNamara, and Pope John Paul II’s Kenny Minchey all threw for four touchdowns on Friday. Friendship Christian’s Garrett Weekly had five TD passes. But nobody came close to Lipscomb Academy’s Luther Richesson, who tossed eight touchdown passes in the Mustangs’ 64-28 win over Pulaski Academy.
Unbeatens clash: At least one unbeaten team is in line to suffer its first loss of the season next week when 3-0 Rockvale visits 4-0 Riverdale in a Region 4-6A matchup.
