Opening Drive (Nov. 25): 12 spots to decide

Now that the Division II championship games are set, this week’s all about the six Division I title matchups.

And although the most anticipated of those is the sixth chapter in the playoff saga known as Oakland vs. Maryville, the others have their own storylines to play out as well.

Trousdale County is looking for redemption after finishing runner-up last season in Class 2A, but they’ll first have to travel to and defeat Meigs County, who’s seeking to avenge their semifinal loss to the Yellow Jackets in Hartsville last season.

Pearl-Cohn is on the cusp of perfection, but the Firebirds must first get revenge for their Class 3A semifinal loss against Covington from two years ago. Pearl-Cohn hosted that game, just like the Firebirds will this Friday.

Nolensville’s first venture into the Class 4A semifinals means a long road trip east to Elizabehton. If the Knights hope to make Cookeville their destination next week, they’ll have to come back from the Tri-Cities area with a win over the unbeaten Cyclones.

Chapter three in the Haywood-Springfield semifinal feud takes the conflict back where it started two years ago, which is good for the Yellow Jackets, as the home team has won both prior meetings.

In 5A, Summit hopes to keep its deepest advance in motion, and although the “revenge tour” doesn’t necessarily apply against Dyer County, the Spartans can still draw from the momentum they built in the first three rounds. Their defense provided the answers and will need to do so again.

Oakland-Maryville VI should be another good addition to the anthology, but this one comes at the expense of a road trip for the Patriots, meaning Black Friday shopping probably needs to wrap by 9 a.m. or earlier.

And then there’s Ravenwood, flying high after getting revenge on Brentwood. Although Houston’s the opponent instead of Whitehaven, the motivation is there all the same for the Raptors.

We’ll talk about all these games and more this week when the 615Preps Podcast drops Wednesday morning on Apple Podcasts, Soundcloud, Stitcher and other various streaming services.
