The Saturday Six: Week 6

0 0

Taking a look at six games that either had a major impact on region races or stood out in other ways from Week 6 action:

Blackman 23, Riverdale 22: The Backyard Brawl lived up to its billing. The Warriors are kicking themselves today after coughing up a 22-3 lead to rival Blackman and dropping this Region 3-6A affair. Instead of Riverdale facing Oakland for the region lead, it’ll be the Blaze who do so, and that showdown happens next week. The Warriors are now on the wrong side of the tiebreaker for second and will have to hope for some help if they want a home playoff game in the first round.

White House Heritage 35, Portland 31: Surprise! The Patriots aren’t out of the running for a home playoff game just yet after knocking off Portland. Winning out against Creek Wood, White House and Montgomery Central would vault White House Heritage to a 4-2 region record. Unless Greenbrier wins out, the Patriots should finish ahead of the Bobcats in the region standings, which would render the head-to-head tiebreaker meaningless. Portland also still must face Springfield, and a loss there could send the Panthers on the road in the first round of the 4A playoffs.

Nolensville 28, Columbia 0: Nolensville is going to be a problem for a lot of teams in the 4A playoffs. The Ryder Galardi-to-Tim Coutras connection is underrated and quite potent, plus the Knights are as experienced as any team in that region. And Galardi’s only a junior. They’ve been on the rise for the past two seasons and this one could be a special one in Nolensville. One of the biggest games around for Week 11 is their contest against Marshall County, as it will in all likelihood be for the Region 4-4A title.

MBA 24, Ensworth 14: Though it’s no longer a region contest, the Big Red made a statement by topping Ensworth. Special teams played a big role with Hayden Horn’s 90-yard punt return for a touchdown, while Marcel Reed tossed two touchdown passes for MBA. The Tigers have dropped back-to-back games following a 4-0 start and will need to rebound next week as Father Ryan visits for homecoming.

East Nashville 34, BGA 26: The Eagles continue their undefeated start to the season, improving to 6-0 with a solid victory at BGA, despite the Wildcats not having the services of senior quarterback Nick Semptimphelter (thumb), who was injured in last week’s loss to CPA. With it being a non-region game and the Wildcats having an open date in Week 7, holding him out was likely an easy – and correct – choice. Meanwhile, we await today’s result to see if next week’s showdown with Pearl-Cohn is a battle of two unbeatens for East Nashville. (Update: it is, after Pearl-Cohn’s 47-40 victory over Hillsboro on Saturday.)

Gallatin 16, Wilson Central 0: Credit Wilson Central’s defense for doing everything in their power – short of running a couple of extra defenders on the field and putting 13 men in the box – to slow down Gallatin senior Spencer Briggs. Briggs was unable to reach the 100-yard mark for the first time this season, finishing with 85 yards on 26 carries. However, Briggs still outgained the Wildcats all by himself, as the Green Wave defense limited Wilson Central to just 62 total yards in posting their third consecutive shutout and fourth overall this season.
